ANTESCOFO & Machine Musicianship

When computers listen and play music with humans!

“Musicians begin formal training by acquiring a body of musical concepts commonly known as musicianship. These concepts underlie the musical skills of listening, performance, and composition. Like humans, computer music programs can benefit from a systematic foundation of musical knowledge” Machine Musicianship MIT press

As a combination of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and Algorithmic music, Machine Musicianship (MM) is an emergent branch of Digital Music. MM combines musicology, psychology, machine learning and signal processing. Over the last decade, MIR has delivered an innovative set of  technologies & tools that are currently revolutionizing music composition, interpretation and production. Here below are three amazing examples of what has been achieved so far. Definitely a boiling field of computer music research with far-reaching business applications.

  • Machine musicianship, Score following & automatic accompaniement with Antescofo: Antescofo is a modular polyphonic Score Following system as well as a Synchronous Programming language for musical composition. The module allows for automatic recognition of music score position and tempo from a realtime audio Stream coming from performer(s), making it possible to synchronize an instrumental performance with computer realized elements. The synchronous language within Antescofo allows flexible writing of time and interaction in computer music.Antescofo technology does not need any (offline) training and is intended to be plug-and-play.
  • Score following & automatic accompaniement:
  • Robot musicianship
